The European Vasculitis Study Group

The European Vasculitis Study Group (EUVAS) was originally formed in 1993 as the European Community Concerted Action Group for the Study of Therapeutic Trials in Systemic Vasculitis (ECSYSVASTRIAL, contract no. BMH1-CT93-1078) with the intention of performing multi-centre studies of therapy in systemic vasculitis. Four treatment protocols (first wave trials) were tested, a standardized assessment method was agreed upon, and a serum and pathology sample bank were established. The Group continued as the study group for ANCA-associated Vasculitis European Randomised Trials (AVERT, contract no. BMH4-CT97-2328) to test existing as well as new strategies for managing vasculitis and designed three further treatment protocols (second wave clinical trials) which were launched in 1998. Since then the group has developed additional randomised controlled trials: IMPROVE started in 2002, RITUXVAS in 2006, and MYCYC is planned for 2007. The origin of EUVAS and its primary activities are reviewed here.
